The opening reception for the Florida Encounter 2015 was a ‘White Out on the Beach’. Having watched The preparations all day I knew that a LOT of hard work and planning went into tonight’s event. The decor was beautiful, the lighting just right. Lots of different table and chair configurations to encourage networking. It seem that every detail had been thought through and accounted for. I couldn’t wait!
Then I arrived ….
My take aways –
- Everything was wet. While many wore white, I was glad I didn’t as I sat on a cold wet cushion for my chair.
- As this was the opening, many dressed to make a good first impression … Hard to wear heals in sand. Fortunately I wasn’t one of them … But still many did.
- It was dark … for an opening event where you don’t know anyone it may be hard to make connections when you cannot see or be seen.
- The food that I did eat was fantastic, however I didn’t get to experience 3/4 of it as the buffet line was a square. Attendees didn’t understand the concept of where to begin or end. I had no clue that the salad was on the opposite side from where I started. Did I mention it was dark? As attendees seemed to just jump into the square … No one moved! After 20 minutes of waiting (or so it seemed) I gave up and enjoyed what I did have and lost interest in the rest. So did the others around me.
The concept of the beach party was a great one! The biggest lesson I learned is that such an event might be better suited as the closing when it can be less formal. Maybe earlier in the day while the sun is still shining … and never while wearing heals as you just looked silly.
